Vol. I · Chapter 59

Splitting Up

Monica stood at the door, her mind already racing with frantic complaints.

How terrifying…

It was truly terrifying!

Miss Phil’s interrogation methods were nothing like what Monica had imagined.

There was clearly no bloodshed, and not even a single visible external injury.

Yet, for some reason, it felt incredibly brutal!

As a bystander in her own body, she watched as Miss Phil used her eyes to gaze at those two men, watched her effortlessly weave one illusion after another, only to gently tear away that layer of hope just when they thought they had escaped, thought they were saved, or thought they had finally grasped it.

This kind of psychological violence was truly bone-chilling.

Even just as a bystander in her own body, Monica felt that Miss Phil’s interrogation method was not particularly friendly to one’s mental health.

Monica had seen Miss Phil use illusions to “pause time” before, and back then, she only thought the ability was quite interesting.

But now, she finally realized just how terrifying this ability could be when used on an enemy.

Using nothing but illusions and verbal guidance, Miss Phil could obtain the information she wanted without anyone being the wiser.

Should she say… as expected of a devil?

Even after performing such a brilliant maneuver, Miss Phil just stood there, watching the screaming drug dealer and muttering softly to herself:

“As expected, receiving too many false perceptions in a short period of time is a bit much for the brain to handle, isn’t it?”

No, it isn’t!

I really don’t think that’s it, Miss Phil!

He was clearly just scared out of his wits by you! How could an ordinary person have ever seen such an eerie ability?!

After venting her internal complaints and calming her emotions, Monica took a deep breath and reported to everyone in the room:

“Ahem, I’ve found out a lot of things.”

Gu Xinglan looked at her with a suspicious gaze.

“Are you sure you just ‘asked’ him? You didn’t use any interrogation methods, did you?”

“O-of course I’m sure! Not a single bit of harm was done…”

“Then what on earth did you do? Why were the screams from next door so terrifying?”

Monica guiltily averted her eyes.

“Rather than that, let’s hear what she found out first.”

Everyone turned around and realized that Lin Han had woken up at some point.

Lin Han shook his head, feeling a bit of a headache, weaving such long sequences of illusions was a significant burden on his mind.

Then, Lin Han motioned for Monica to tell them what she knew.

And so, Monica began to recount the information Phil had extracted, piece by piece…

As Monica spoke, the atmosphere in the room shifted continuously.

At first, everyone was simply taking diligent notes.

Then came the surprise.

Then, utter disbelief.

Contact codes, meeting points, transaction methods…

Was it really possible to just ask and find out all this?

“That’s the gist of it. Tomorrow, the Radiant Foundation is hosting a charity auction. Apparently, it’s to raise funds for medical aid in the Old District, but in reality, many of X City’s Transcendent Factions will be attending to witness the Metamorphosis Society’s ‘Masterpiece.’”

Monica relayed everything she had gathered from the drug dealer and the boy who bought the drug:

“The location of the charity auction is unknown; almost no information regarding it can be found on the internet. Only those deemed qualified by the Radiant Foundation will receive an invitation, which will then grant them further details.”

By the end, everyone’s expression had turned somewhat numb, wearing a look that said: Fine, we won’t be surprised by anything you dig up anymore.

Seeing that Monica seemed to have finished, Gu Xinglan finally couldn’t help but ask:

“All of this… how did you get them to talk?”

Monica opened her mouth and gave a dry smile.

“Well, maybe, I… I exercised a bit of subjective initiative?”

“Why is that phrased like a question?!”

Gu Xinglan felt like she might still be dreaming, how could a golden retriever who seemed so unreliable be even better at interrogation than the people from SAVE?

This was too much of a shock to her worldview.

On the other side, Lin Han picked up the pen and paper on the table. After making a show of organizing the information Monica had just provided, he laid out the plan he had already formulated while questioning those two:

“Based on the intelligence, we will split into two groups. One group will immediately follow the leads provided by the drug dealer, while the other will find a way to attend tomorrow’s charity auction.”

“The auction side should have a lower risk level, so we’ll have one person from the Special Operations Division join Team 7 for that.”

Then, Lin Han looked at Zhao Chenfeng.

“Captain Zhao, take the rest of Team 3 and move out immediately to raid the locations the drug dealer confessed to. While they still don’t know the information has been leaked, gather as much evidence as possible.”

“The priority isn’t making arrests, but finding evidence, especially anything that proves a connection between the Radiant Foundation and the Metamorphosis Society.”

“As long as there’s enough evidence, the W City branch can intervene forcefully, and the X City side won’t be able to stop it even if they want to.”

Zhao Chenfeng nodded. “Understood.”

Lin Han then looked toward Monica. “Monica, you go with Captain Zhao as well.”

“Roger that!”

Having finally grasped a potential lead on Xiao Rou’s whereabouts, Monica looked eager to get started.

In addition to considering her as someone with LV2 combat power, Lin Han’s main reason for sending Monica along was as an added layer of insurance. If they ran into real trouble, he could still have Phil step in through Monica’s body.

At that moment, Zhou Ran also raised his hand.

“Team Leader, let me go with Captain Zhao and the others too. I’m good at things like running errands, moving equipment, and carrying people.”

Lin Han thought for a moment and felt that more manpower might be needed on that side. “Then you will follow Captain Zhao’s orders in everything.”

“Roger!”

After arranging the upcoming tasks, Zhao Chenfeng ultimately decided to leave Gu Xinglan, who was relatively “familiar” with Team 7, to participate in the operation here at the auction.

He himself took the remaining members of Team 3, Zhou Ran, and Monica and left, immediately setting to work.

Perhaps because they knew time was of the essence and that this hard-won intelligence could expire with every passing second, everyone moved quickly.

Once the door closed, silence fell once again.

Only Lin Han, Gu Xinglan, Tang Xiaoman, Shen Qingshu, and Xu Weian remained in the room.

The problem currently facing them was equally thorny, how were they going to sneak into tomorrow’s charity auction banquet?

Forcing their way in by directly using their SAVE identities might not be impossible, but if possible, Lin Han wanted to use a better method.

“The auction banquet tomorrow has invited local celebrities and representatives of Transcendent Factions. We don’t have invitations. If we force our way in, we’ll alert the enemy, and we might not get to see what we want to see.”

Tang Xiaoman tentatively raised her hand to speak:

“Can we forge identities?”

Xu Weian shook his head.

“It’s very difficult to forge identities that can withstand scrutiny in such a short amount of time. Besides, since they’re using an invitation system, the entry verification likely won’t be lax.”

Gu Xinglan pondered for a moment, feeling as though the problem was a dead end.

With only one day, how could they possibly obtain an invitation from the Radiant Foundation through normal channels?

“Storm the place?” Gu Xinglan suggested, sounding like she had given up.

“That would be even worse than using SAVE’s administrative measures,” Lin Han said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “It’s best if we can get in without alerting them.”

The room fell silent once more.

Just then, Shen Qingshu looked up. For some reason, her expression seemed filled with hesitation and struggle.

But as she scanned the room and saw everyone buried in thought, she finally seemed to give in, saying with a sigh:

“The invitations… maybe I can find a way.”
