Vol. I · Chapter 36

A Date

The next morning.

Lin Han woke up feeling bizarrely wide awake.

Finding that he couldn’t fall back asleep no matter what, Lin Han sighed, turned off the alarm that wouldn’t go off for another ten minutes, and got up to wash up.

After washing up, Lin Han pondered whether he should wake Jiang Wanfeng up too.

Of course, this was merely out of his responsibility as an older brother. Even on a holiday, one should maintain good sleeping habits, right?

It definitely wasn’t because he was already up and just didn’t want to see anyone else sleeping in.

But unexpectedly, upon opening the door and stepping into the living room, Lin Han was greeted by a surprising sight.

In the living room, Jiang Wanfeng was actually awake too.

She was sitting by the coffee table holding a warm cup of milk. Her hair was messy like a little maniac’s, yet her eyes were unusually clear.

“Up so early?”

Lin Han asked in confusion.

“Yeah.”

Jiang Wanfeng simply nodded, her eyes fixed on him as if she were looking at some rare creature.

Lin Han walked into the kitchen to pour himself some water, only to find Jiang Wanfeng’s gaze tracking his movements.

Lin Han picked up a cup.

Jiang Wanfeng was still watching.

Lin Han took a sip of water.

Jiang Wanfeng continued to watch.

“What are you doing?” Lin Han finally couldn’t help but ask.

Jiang Wanfeng slowly spoke:

“Bro got up really early today. Didn’t you say you were on holiday today?”

“Just a corporate slave’s biological clock, plus you got up even earlier.”

“Just a student’s biological clock.”

Jiang Wanfeng parroted him.

The siblings seemed to be speaking in riddles, but Lin Han genuinely didn’t know which of his little sister’s nerves had short-circuited today.

After asking Jiang Wanfeng if she had eaten and receiving the reply that she’d already had a few slices of bread, Lin Han decided to casually throw together some breakfast for himself.

To make the atmosphere a little less weird, Lin Han fried an egg while casually asking Jiang Wanfeng, “What are your plans for today?”

“Reading all alone, resting all alone, and doing my homework all alone.”

He was certain now.

There was definitely something wrong with Jiang Wanfeng’s brain.

What did she mean by “all alone”? Why did she have to specifically emphasize that?

Before Lin Han’s crashed brain could reboot, Jiang Wanfeng continued asking in a sullen tone:

“Never mind me. What about you, bro? What are your plans for today?”

“Me…?”

Lin Han scooped the fried egg onto a plate, still not realizing that his series of strange questions yesterday had led Jiang Wanfeng to make even stranger assumptions.

“I’ll just stay home and play games. It’s a rare day off to relax.”

Lin Han didn’t intend to tell Jiang Wanfeng about the game Devil Incarnation. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her; he purely didn’t want to drag her into it.

“Is… that right? As long as you don’t go out.”

For some reason, after hearing Lin Han’s reply, Jiang Wanfeng’s voice no longer sounded so strange, as if she had breathed a sigh of relief.

Then Jiang Wanfeng stretched vigorously, unreservedly showing off her pretty little belly and beautiful waist curve, and her tone became cheerful:

“Ahhh, why do I have to worry about this stupid Bro so early in the morning… Whatever, I’m going back to catch up on my sleep. So sleepy, so sleepy.”

Lin Han was full of question marks.

“So if you need to catch up on sleep, why did you get up so early? And what does this have to do with me?”

“Hmph, hmph…”

Jiang Wanfeng grunted a few times and began to headbutt Lin Han’s arm repeatedly like a little calf. Her movements were very light; rather than being angry, it was more like she was acting spoiled.

“It’s your fault anyway, bleh—”

Making a funny face, Jiang Wanfeng flicked her messy hair and went back to her room to sleep.

It’s probably that time of the month… Lin Han figured he had deduced the reason for Jiang Wanfeng’s unusual behavior today, so he no longer bothered to care about what was exactly going on in her head.

Anyway, it wasn’t the first time this girl acted on a whim, and her mood was always like a barometer.

After eating breakfast, seeing that it was almost time, Lin Han opened the game and lay down in the Simulation Capsule.

The familiar darkness descended, the welcome message appeared, and she transformed into Phil.

This time, she didn’t dawdle in the game space. With practiced ease, she clicked on Monica’s avatar and initiated the soul transfer.

Early mornings in X City were not as bustling as those in W City.

As one of the core gathering hubs for Transcendents in the entirety of District 1, W City had evolved over the past decade into a sprawling metropolis where science and supernatural technology intertwined. Whether morning or night, endless neon lights shone brightly, pedestrians were always in a hurry, and the down-to-earth atmosphere of everyday life had faded significantly.

X City, however, was completely different—

The streets were not wide, and the signs of the roadside shops still retained their old-fashioned styles. There were breakfast stalls along the road, with steam rising from the bamboo steamers, mixing with the aroma of freshly made steamed buns to form a warm mist in the chilly air.

Today, Monica had changed out of her usual practical Calamity Hunter outfit. Her blonde hair was tied into a side ponytail, the ends resting on her shoulder and gently swaying with her movements.

She wore a neatly kept, light beige short jacket over a warm yellow knit sweater. The soft colors made her blonde hair appear even brighter.

She paired this with dark brown culottes, thick black leggings, and old leather boots. Around her neck was a blue scarf; the color wasn’t flashy, but it suited her unexpectedly well.

The young girl looked around, her charming and lively youthfulness irrepressible.

Her expectant and excited demeanor made many passing elders unable to help but smile kindly, as if seeing themselves in their youth.

Finally, after turning her head for who knows how many times, Monica saw the figure she had been waiting for.

“Phi—”

She almost shouted it out, but realizing that others couldn’t see Miss Phil, Monica quickly lowered her voice. She softly called the name of the girl who had suddenly appeared beside her, though her joyful mood was as impossible to hide as the summer sun.

Miss Phil was still wearing her usual outfit. If anyone else wore that black gothic dress, it would inevitably look pretentious and over-the-top, but on her, it was just right.

Her white hair and the black dress contrasted to create a harmonious feel.

“You’re out already? I thought you’d dawdle a bit longer.”

Miss Phil said, her face still wearing that inscrutable half-smile.

But Monica felt that Miss Phil was probably in a pretty good mood.

After interacting with her these past few times, Monica felt that she could already vaguely see some of Miss Phil’s hidden emotions.

After all, they were already “friends” now!

Monica giggled and pointed at herself.

“Miss Phil, how do I look today?”

“I can’t believe there’s actually someone who actively asks others to praise their outfit…”

Phil was rendered speechless for a moment, feeling that Monica looked just like a big golden retriever wagging its tail and begging for praise.

To be honest, Monica’s outfit couldn’t really be considered fashionable. After all, her younger sister’s casual wear was always very stylish, which had already raised her standards.

But Monica’s appearance was quite high to begin with, so she looked good even if she just dressed casually.

So Phil looked her up and down, then nodded.

“Not bad.”

“Not bad means very cute, right? Right, right?”

“…Your ears possess a very strong subjective initiative.”

Monica didn’t care at all. She muttered, “Because I know Miss Phil is a tsundere,” and then excitedly adjusted her canvas messenger bag.

“Let’s go!”

“The date begins!”
