The Daughter Missing for Five Years

Ji He sat back down on the sofa, and when she opened the backend, she froze for a moment.
She saw a screen full of unfamiliar IDs all sending private messages asking for her payment QR code.
Ji He clicked on an ID named Missing Xiao Rong and sent her payment code.
Just then, Old Wu, the repairman, walked over to her with his tools, looking helpless. “Miss Ji, your water pipes aren’t broken. It’s just that… you didn’t pay your water bill.”
Ji “Never even thought about water bills” He: “…”
Cultivators all struggle against the Heavens to seize a slim chance of Ascension. Therefore, although she had entered the Dao through the mystic arts, she never calculated matters related to herself.
Furthermore, whether in her past life or as the original owner of this body, she had never needed to pay a water bill.
Old Wu, the repairman, rubbed his hands against the seams of his trousers, looking a bit awkward, as if he didn’t know how to speak.
“Miss Ji, about the fee… since it’s not broken, I won’t charge you for repairs. I’ll just charge a call-out fee of 20.”
Ji He transferred one hundred and fifty to him for the repair fee.
Old Wu thanked her repeatedly, then checked all the water pipes in her house for her. Fearing she wouldn’t know how to do it, he personally demonstrated how to pay bills online.
Ji He paid the water bill and took the opportunity to pay the electricity bill as well.
Only then did Old Wu pick up his toolbox and leave.
Meanwhile, “Missing Xiao Rong” had already scanned the code and paid two thousand.
Ji He initiated the connection.
The connection was established, and Missing Xiao Rong appeared on the screen.
What was somewhat surprising was that despite the name “Missing Xiao Rong” sounding a bit cute and girly, the person himself was a man in his fifties with unkempt stubble and a face full of deep wrinkles.
Judging by his clothes, he looked like a construction worker; he was even wearing a safety helmet on his head.
Perhaps because it was his first time appearing on a livestream, he looked very restless, not knowing where to put his gaze for a moment.
“Miss Ji, hello. My surname is Zhong.”
He was very polite when he greeted her, looking Ji He in the eye as he spoke.
After finishing, he quickly looked away again, likely uncomfortable with looking at the screen.
“I want to ask you to help me find my daughter.”
At the mention of his daughter, tears welled up in Uncle Zhong’s eyes.
Perhaps not wanting to cry in the livestream, he quickly wiped them away.
“My daughter, Xiao Rong, has been missing for five years. A friend recommended me to come here. He said Miss Ji’s fortune-telling is incredibly accurate. I’m truly at the end of my rope, so I can only come and beg Miss Ji to help me find Xiao Rong. Please… Miss Ji.”
Uncle Zhong didn’t look at the screen, and since he wasn’t very literate, he didn’t know what was being said in the bullet comments.
He simply continued, “Her mother and I aren’t very capable; we just hoped our daughter would be successful. Xiao Rong didn’t let us down; she was the only child in our village to get into university. During those four years of university, she hardly spent a penny of the family’s money, and sometimes she would even send money back to us.”
“But the year Xiao Rong graduated, she suddenly sent us a text message saying she was going out of town to work and might be out of touch for a long time, so we shouldn’t worry. At first, we didn’t think much of it; Xiao Rong had always been independent and didn’t need us to fret over her, and we didn’t want to become a burden to her. But by the time we realized something was wrong, we could no longer get in touch with her.”
As Uncle Zhong spoke, tears welled up in his eyes again. He wiped them away and happened to see the bullet comments flashing across the screen.
He didn’t recognize many words, but the two characters for ‘police’ were ones he had encountered countless times; every stroke and line was etched into his very marrow.
Uncle Zhong’s lips trembled as he said in a choked voice, “We did report it to the police, but they couldn’t find her either. It’s not that her mother and I haven’t wondered if Xiao Rong has already… Even if something really has happened to her, we want to know where she is. At the very least, we want to bring her home!”
Ji He looked at Uncle Zhong’s face and spoke up. “Your daughter is still alive.”
“Is it true?”
Uncle Zhong couldn’t help but straighten his back, the seed of hope shining in his eyes.
“As long as she’s alive… as long as she’s alive.”
His lips quivered as he asked with a tremble in his voice, “Miss Ji, do you know where Xiao Rong is now?”
Ji He continued, “Leave your village and head south. Xiao Rong is in the fourth village you pass.”
Uncle Zhong’s video feed jerked.
After a long silence, he asked hoarsely, “Miss Ji, are you saying… Xiao Rong has been right near our home all this time?”
“Yes.”
Ji He nodded, a trace of pity in her eyes.
Their daughter had been right under their noses, yet they hadn’t realized it at all.
Even though she didn’t have children, she knew that for parents, this kind of situation was nothing short of the agonizing torture of a thousand cuts.
Panicking, Uncle Zhong rushed toward the door. He had to go home; he had to find Xiao Rong.
Ji He called out to stop him.
“You won’t be able to save Xiao Rong if you just rush over like that.”
“Miss Ji, what should I do then?”
Uncle Zhong looked at Ji He, feeling utterly lost.
“Go to the police, but not right now.”
Ji He checked the time and said, “At 3:00 PM sharp, go to the police station nearest to you. Find the very first person you see in a police uniform and talk to them.”
Across the screen, Uncle Zhong looked into Ji He’s calm, unfazed eyes, and he gradually regained his composure.
He had been searching for so long and had found nothing.
Since Miss Ji was able to help, he chose to believe her!
Uncle Zhong clenched his fists. “Miss Ji, I understand.”
Ji He added:
“If you are worried, you can go to that village to take a look first. When you arrive, walk inside with your head down. Stop when someone blocks you, and you will see Xiao Rong then. But remember, do not make a sound. After you see Xiao Rong, you must not act impulsively; leave immediately! Otherwise, you will never be able to save Xiao Rong again.”
Ji He’s tone grew a bit heavier.
Uncle Zhong nodded repeatedly. If Xiao Rong was truly still alive as Miss Ji said, then no matter what, he would absolutely not speak and drag her down!
