Vol. I · Chapter 14

The Nonexistent Game

Lin Han climbed out of the Simulation Capsule, his steps a little unsteady. He had to hold onto the desk to support himself.

Without taking a moment to rest, he immediately sat down at the computer. First, he tried to delete the game Devil Incarnation. Unsurprisingly, it couldn’t be deleted. Then, he began to search—

Devil Incarnation“, no results.

“Devil Incarnation game”, no results.

“Phildeia”, no results.

“Devil Simulation Capsule new game”.

There was still no useful information, only a scattered few shopping ads for Simulation Capsules and game review recommendations.

Lin Han switched between several search engines.

The results were the same.

Lin Han stared at the screen, his gaze slowly losing focus.

It would be one thing if it were just a niche game with no promotion.

But a game that could connect to a Simulation Capsule and possess such an incredible level of realism couldn’t possibly have absolutely zero information available online.

Furthermore, he had no memory of ever installing this game.

He originally thought Jiang Wanfeng had secretly used his computer and downloaded it.

But now, it seemed things were far from being that simple…

Lin Han, who had dealt with Calamities more times than he could count, had already realized it, everything happening was most likely connected to Calamities.

Besides, blaming 90% of the weird events in this world on Calamities was usually right.

Lin Han leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

This wasn’t normal.

It hadn’t been normal from the very beginning.

Actually, when he logged in tonight, he already felt that something was off.

After all, the in-game time was actually synchronized with reality.

He just hadn’t thought much of it at the time, still able to convince himself it was some sort of “immersive design.”

But later…

Mutants, chitinous growths, Bai Yu…

These weren’t some dime-a-dozen game assets; Bai Yu’s profile was even classified information.

This could no longer be dismissed as a mere “coincidence.”

Lin Han even felt a strong urge, he wanted to go to the SAVE Building right now.

To see if Bai Yu was still there, and to see if she, the Chief of the W City SAVE Special Operations Division, had truly left for X City.

To check if there really was a licensed Calamity Hunter named Monica in X City.

It was just a thought, after all.

As an employee of the SAVE Intelligence Processing Division, Lin Han knew better than anyone just how sensitive SAVE really was.

Let alone his current connection to a highly suspected Calamity existence like the “Devil”, even in normal times, if he casually investigated things he shouldn’t, SAVE’s relevant departments would instantly track him down to invite him for a cup of tea.

After all, a Calamity was no laughing matter. Some higher-level Calamities even possessed the ability of “Pollution”, capable of imperceptibly twisting a person’s mind, driving them mad, or even turning them into an accomplice of the Calamity.

SAVE employees, who dealt with Calamities year-round, had always been key targets for monitoring.

If it was truly discovered that he was connected to a Calamity, what awaited him would probably be indefinite imprisonment.

Lin Han didn’t want to deal with the lunatics from the Containment and Management Division just yet.

“To think that one day, it would be my turn to worry about SAVE’s investigations…”

Lin Han smiled self-deprecatingly.

He cleared his search history and closed the browser.

The room went dark again, but his heart remained restless.

Just then, the sound of a key being inserted into the lock came from the door.

Click.

“I’m back.”

Jiang Wanfeng’s voice came from the entryway.

Lin Han stood up, left the room, and walked to the door.

Jiang Wanfeng was taking off her shoes. One foot, clad in a white thigh-high sock, was planted on the floor, while the other was kicked back. Her school uniform jacket was draped over her arm.

“Why are you back so late?”

“The tutor kept us late.”

After taking off her shoes, Jiang Wanfeng unceremoniously peeled off her thigh-high socks and casually tossed them onto the sofa. Then, she leaped up and sank her entire body into the cushions, her two fair, bare feet swaying in the air as she let out a long sigh:

“I’m exhausted~”

Looking thoroughly disgusted, Lin Han picked up her socks and tossed them into the bathroom hamper. Coming back out, he scolded her:

“How many times have I told you not to leave your socks everywhere?”

“Eh~ helping me take care of my socks is a perk for my dear brother~”

“Say something stupid like that again and I’m going to hit you.”

“Hmph, hmph, what can I say, I’m a beautiful girl. The world just gives privileges to beautiful girls.”

“…Does anyone actually call themselves a beautiful girl?”

“I’m just telling the truth. I love telling the truth.”

After humming and whining for a bit, Jiang Wanfeng flopped over like a salted fish to face the ceiling. Then, she suddenly froze and sat up abruptly.

“Bro.”

“Hm?”

“Why do you look so awful?”

Lin Han touched his face.

“Do I?”

“You do.”

Jiang Wanfeng frowned, slid off the sofa, and took two steps closer to Lin Han.

“You look like someone sucked the life out of you.”

Jiang Wanfeng asked suspiciously, “Did you get a girlfriend?”

“Get lost, get lost,” Lin Han feigned disgust. “I only look awful because I had to see you.”

“Hey—”

Jiang Wanfeng puffed out her cheeks in dissatisfaction.

“An older brother isn’t allowed to show any expression other than a smile when he sees his Little Sister, it’s basic etiquette, etiquette! Bro, have you forgotten our family’s ancestral teaching?”

“Don’t just randomly alter our family’s ancestral teaching.”

Lin Han massaged his forehead, then brushed it off, “I probably just look bad because I’ve been working too much overtime lately. I’ll be fine after a little rest.”

“Is that so—”

Jiang Wanfeng dragged out her words. Seeing that Lin Han still had the energy to retort, she figured it probably wasn’t a big deal and felt relieved.

“I knew it. How could my bro ever find a girlfriend?”

Lin Han took a deep breath, reminding himself not to stoop to Jiang Wanfeng’s level.

However, he suddenly felt a little more relaxed inside.

The overwhelming confusion from earlier—the Mutants, Devils, and the blurring of reality and the game—seemed to be diluted by the familiar, noisy banter of his home.

Sure enough, home was much livelier with this freeloading Little Sister around.

…Of course, he was definitely not a siscon.

“I’m going to take a shower.”

Jiang Wanfeng waved her hand in front of a dazed Lin Han.

“Yeah.”

Just as she was about to leave, Lin Han suddenly spoke up.

“Wanfeng.”

Jiang Wanfeng stopped in her tracks.

“What is it?”

“Do you know a game called Devil Incarnation?”

Jiang Wanfeng turned her head.

“What?”

Devil Incarnation.”

Lin Han tried his best to make his tone sound casual. “A Simulation Capsule game, I think it came out recently.”

Jiang Wanfeng frowned.

“Never heard of it,” Jiang Wanfeng looked at him suspiciously. “What’s up with this game?”

Lin Han looked at her, and after a moment, waved his hand.

“Nothing. Just asking.”

Jiang Wanfeng didn’t press the matter immediately.

She just stared at him for two seconds, then suddenly said with a weird expression:

“Bro, tell me the truth. Is the reason you look so terrible not actually because of overtime, but because you played some weird game?”

“…?”

“You know, that kind, you know what I mean… After all, aren’t there a lot of Simulation Capsule games that are like that…”

Jiang Wanfeng’s face suddenly flushed red. Stammering, she gestured with her hands:

“The kind that’s, well, not very healthy, the kind you can only play secretly by yourself… Ahem… You need to show some restraint, bro, I don’t have a sister-in-law yet… though it’s not like I don’t understand…”

“Like hell you understand!”

Lin Han finally couldn’t hold back anymore. He grabbed a throw pillow from the sofa and hurled it at Jiang Wanfeng.

Jiang Wanfeng dodged with a giggle, clearly delighted at having teased him. Even though she wasn’t very comfortable with this kind of topic herself, she still stuck her tongue out at Lin Han through her blush.

“Take care of your health, bro. Don’t go suddenly dropping dead one day, or else I’ll have to be the one to clear your browsing history.”

After dropping that “auspicious” remark, Jiang Wanfeng quickly slipped away.

On the other side, Lin Han sighed for what felt like the millionth time, but the corners of his lips couldn’t help but curl up slightly.

“This girl…”

It wasn’t until he walked back to his own room and looked at his computer with its open browser that his troubles came surging back. Lin Han’s smile gradually froze and faded away.

He suddenly realized that he would probably have a hard time falling asleep tonight.
