Vol. I · Chapter 15
The Division Chief
“Good morning.”
“Good morning… T-Team Leader?!”
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“Team Leader… did you not sleep last night? You look terrible…”
Looking at Tang Xiaoman’s terrified face, Lin Han subconsciously touched his own face.
“Do I look that bad?”
Beside them, Zhou Ran also put down his dumbbell and nodded with a worried expression.
“Team Leader, although there’s been a lot of overtime work lately, you still need to take care of your health.”
Lin Han waved his hand dismissively and said casually, “I just didn’t sleep very well last night, that’s all.”
To be exact, he had barely slept at all.
Whenever Lin Han closed his eyes, the image of that man in the sewer transforming into a Mutant would flash in his mind.
In the early hours of the morning, when he was finally about to fall asleep, he had a dream in his groggy state.
In the dream, his identity had been completely replaced by Phildeia. No one remembered Lin Han anymore, and that devious and elegant Devil was even sitting brazenly at Lin Han’s desk, teasing a tearful Tang Xiaoman.
So Lin Han woke up with a start, unable to fall back asleep, and could only lie in bed in despair, waiting for his alarm to ring.
After Jiang Wanfeng left for school, Lin Han didn’t play Devil Incarnation like he did yesterday, or rather, he was now trying to avoid the game as much as possible.
After such an ordeal, it was to be expected that Lin Han would look terrible, but he hadn’t expected it to be so obvious.
Lin Han took a sip of the coffee Tang Xiaoman handed him.
The bitter taste slid down his throat, barely dragging his consciousness back from the brink of death.
Beside him, Zhou Ran spoke in a rather serious tone:
“Team Leader, you need to exercise. A strong physique can combat fatigue.”
“What I want to combat most right now is going to work.”
“Then you need to exercise even more. As long as you train to be strong enough, you can defeat the people who make you go to work.”
“…You’d better not let the General Administration Division hear this theory of yours, or they’ll hang you outside the office building as a public warning.”
As he spoke, Lin Han walked over to the office printer, intending to print out the materials he had organized yesterday, but just taking one look at the printer, he froze.
“…”
The printer sat there quietly, with a piece of paper stuck to it.
It read: How many times has this broken down already? Don’t touch it, I’m begging you — Maintenance Department.
“Th-this is…”
Tang Xiaoman, sweating profusely, tried to explain something.
“Say no more.”
Lin Han silently turned his gaze toward Shen Qingshu, who was scribbling at her workstation.
Seeming to notice the stares, Shen Qingshu looked up in confusion, only to find everyone else in the office staring at her.
She forced out what she considered to be a friendly smile.
“Your doing?” Lin Han pointed at the printer.
Her face immediately fell.
Forget it…
Lin Han hadn’t expected this team to be normal in the first place. The fact that they had only broken a printer this morning was already a massive blessing.
Just as Lin Han sat down, preparing to start his day’s work, a sudden knock came from the door.
“Is Lin Han here?”
Lin Han looked up and saw a female colleague in a SAVE uniform standing at the door. If memory served, she was a member of the Intelligence Processing Division, Team 1.
“What is it?”
“The Division Chief is looking for you. More accurately, looking for Team 7.”
An ominous premonition welled up in Lin Han’s heart…
Ten minutes later.
Lin Han knocked on the door of the Intelligence Processing Division Chief’s office.
“Come in, come in.”
A brisk voice came from inside.
Lin Han pushed the door open. Directly in front of him was a large curved office desk and a swivel chair facing away from him.
Just as Lin Han was feeling a bit puzzled, the swivel chair slowly turned around. The Division Chief sitting on it had her legs crossed and her arms folded across her chest, her expression completely serious—
“I knew you would come.”
“Huh?” Lin Han was confused. “Didn’t you call me…”
“Long time no see.”
“If I remember correctly, didn’t we just meet the day before yesterday?”
“Now, it is up to you to pilot Unit-01…”
“…I’m leaving.”
“Hey!” The Division Chief said, a bit displeased. “Don’t ruin the atmosphere!”
Lin Han looked at the Division Chief in front of him, the corner of his mouth twitching.
The Chief of the W City SAVE Intelligence Processing Division sat behind her spacious desk, spinning her swivel chair in a huff.
She looked very small.
Not small in presence, but small in a purely physical sense.
She had a petite figure and wore an obviously custom-made, small-sized uniform. Her long blue hair was tied into a pair of fluffy twin-tails. Her feet, which couldn’t touch the floor while sitting in the chair, dangled in the air, and she held a white candy cigarette in her mouth.
If someone who didn’t know the situation saw her for the first time, they would probably suspect that some elementary schooler had wandered into the office area by mistake.
Chief of the Intelligence Processing Division, Qin Zhizhi.
A creature with absolutely no dignity, and possibly no moral integrity either.
In a sense, Lin Han felt that the Intelligence Processing Division’s bad reputation had a lot to do with this Division Chief.
“Never mind, never mind. How boring. Take a seat.”
Seeing Lin Han’s subtle look, Qin Zhizhi coughed twice and waved for Lin Han to sit down.
“I’ve always hoped that one day I could say a line like that, but you didn’t cooperate at all. You ruined my dream, you know that!”
“I’d prefer it if your dream wasn’t so cheap.”
Lin Han took a deep breath, trying his best to calm his exasperated mood.
“Alright, alright. Enough nonsense, let’s get back to business.”
“Chief, what kind of troublesome matter are you throwing our way this time?”
Qin Zhizhi paused her chewing on the candy cigarette.
“Why do you have to say such unpleasant things right off the bat?”
“Then I’ll rephrase,” Lin Han said. “Chief, what glorious task is it this time that nobody wants to touch, nobody dares to touch, and will likely end up with us taking the blame?”
Qin Zhizhi immediately showed a gratified expression.
“See, doesn’t that sound much better?”
“How does it sound better?”
“At least you added the word ‘glorious’.”
You’re not even willing to deny the preceding adjectives.
Lin Han sighed.
Qin Zhizhi shifted the candy cigarette in her mouth to the other side, rested her chin on her hands, and smiled like a weasel that had just stolen a chicken.
“Actually, it’s nothing major.”
“Usually, that sentence is followed by something major.”
“There’s been a major breakthrough in the investigation of the Mutant Incidents.”
Lin Han’s gaze narrowed slightly.
As if not noticing the subtle change in Lin Han’s expression, Qin Zhizhi continued:
“So I immediately thought of your Team 7. After all, you guys are the ace unit under my command.”
“…So we’re the aces?”
“Of course!”
Qin Zhizhi waved her hand grandly, but her physique was simply too petite. As a result, the action didn’t convey the intended boldness at all; instead, she looked more like a child trying to imitate an adult, appearing quite adorable.
“Don’t worry about how outsiders view you. Things like public reputation are just nonsense spoken by people who don’t know the business.”
Qin Zhizhi stood up on her chair, trying to look more imposing.
However, the swivel chair spun, and with a yelp, she almost fell right off.
So, she silently sat back down.
Lin Han pretended not to see anything.
Qin Zhizhi put her hands on her hips and declared with absolute conviction:
“Every single person in Team 7 was personally selected by me. You are the elite of the elite, the ace of aces. You’re completely different from the people in the other teams of our Intelligence Division who came in through standard recruitment just to handle trivial matters.”
“You are meant for great things!”
“Alright, alright…”
Lin Han didn’t want to keep entertaining her exaggerated flattery and empty promises.
“So, what is the mission?”
Qin Zhizhi smiled.
She raised her hands and clapped.
“You can all come in now.”
